EC QUARANTINE PROCEDURES

THIS IS FOR NEW BOARDING HORSES AND IS THE PROCEDURE WE FOLLOW BEFORE WE RELEASE A HORSE INTO THE HERD AT EC

  • Two weeks prior to moving to EC Quarantine/Transition barn, complete vaccine records and coggins must be submitted to Dusty LaBeth. These records will be reviewed by EC staff and Dr. Maureen Sutter of Red Oak Animal Hospital. All horses will need to receive a microchip to verify identification. (EC recommends the Home Again Temp Scan Microchip.)
  • If not previously vaccinated with strangles a strangles titer is recommended. Will not vaccinate if results are greater than 1:3200.
  • Prior to moving to Quarantine/Transition barn a guttural pouch endoscopy will need to be performed at Red Oak Animal Hospital to collect a sample to submit for Strangles PCR and culture (EC will pay for the initial guttural pouch endoscopy and testing.) Ideally horse should leave directly from Red Oak Animal Hospital to EC Quarantine/Transition barn, where the horse will be quarantined for 3 weeks.
  • Once PCR and culture results are negative, the horse can be given the intranasal Strangles vaccine. If horse hasn’t been previously vaccinated with Strangles, the horse will need to be given a booster in 2-3 weeks. Ideally, these vaccines will be given at the Quarantine/Transition barn before moving to EC.
  • A general health exam will be done by Dr. Sutter before moving to EC (EC will pay for this exam.)
